Introduction

The 57 acres that comprise Cedar Ridge Farm are located in the beautiful rolling hills of South Central Kentucky. My wife, our four children, and I are on a homesteading adventure as we work toward increased self-sufficiency. We grow much of our own food and enjoy being in touch with the agrarian roots of our lives.

One of the major projects we have undertaken is the building of our own home. The house we're building has three major distinguishing features: 1. we're building it without incurring any debt; 2. it is a timber frame structure; and 3. the exterior walls will be plastered straw bales. We live debt and mortgage free, and building our house with that approach makes perfect sense. Large timbers in a home possess a beauty and project a sense of strength, stability, and warmth that we want in our home. Straw bale walls provide insulation and make ecological sense. This blog is a record of our home-building project.

A video tour of the house filmed on September 7, 2012, just after we finished the 2nd coat of plaster on the downstairs walls.

Thank you for the video tour! I've gone back and read your blog from the beginning, and this really helps to understand the entire flow. I would be interested in looking up into the cupola from the inside of the house if you ever get a chance to do another video. Will the cupola have any interior access? Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your adventure with the world. Facinating project, and great job!

You're welcome! I will do another video as we progress, and I'll try to remember to look up into the cupola. There will be no interior access to the cupola -- it's only a little over 3 feet square inside and is intended for ventilation. Our children would love if there was access, but there's also not any feasible way to make it so.

It is cool to see the progress. I have finaly gotten time to get back into blogging and have made some progress of our own. If you get a chance stop by and check it out. Are you planning to use your cistern for potable water? If so, how do you protect it from becoming gray water?
